Back-Burner

It’s time to get honest, like brutally honest. Some weeks feel like there isn’t a moment to spare on anything. We burn ourselves out and we don’t get enough rest. We start cutting corners just to make it without having a mental breakdown. And for awhile, we can keep it up. But at some point, we will burn out.

It’s easy to put things on the back-burner. The dreams we had when we were younger. We start compromising on what we were once passionate about. We might get into the wrong relationships instead of waiting for God’s answer. We take the first job offer we get instead of waiting to see what God wants us to do. We might skip reading the Bible in the morning just for 15 more minutes of much needed sleep. We start to put God on the back-burner, promising ourselves we’ll get back to Him.

But what if that day doesn’t come? What if you miss opportunities God has for you because the focus has been off for too long? Some days, I honestly feel so distant from His presence it’s hard to bring myself to my knees again. I feel like I have let Him down so many times. That my priorities are never in the right order. But God doesn’t love me because I go to Him, He loves me because I’m His child.

Today is your chance. Don’t wait for tomorrow. By continuing to focus on tomorrow, you miss the opportunities of today. No matter how long it’s been, talk to Him today. It’s time to check what’s on your back-burner.

“Even now,’ declares the Lord, ‘return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.’ Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity.” – Joel 2:12-13

“Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God. Your sins have been your downfall! Take words with you and return to the Lord. Say to him: ‘Forgive all our sins and receive us graciously, that we may offer the fruit of our lips.” -Hosea 14:1-2
